Trauma Release Exercise

Some experiences we encounter cause intense stress and tension in our body. If we are unable to change the circumstances or receive treatment in the way of resolution, these situations would cause that strees turns into mental physical trauma. As these stress accumulations can have great consequences in our body, with the accumulation of minor effects, they can turn into mentally depressive states in total and into key points in our body such as a physically active contraction / pain / nodal point. Trauma Release Exercises (TRE) is based on the basic idea supported by research that stress, tension and trauma are both psychological and physical at same time. This technique is designed to help release the deep tension created in the body during a traumatic experience or through chronic stress.

TRE was created by psychologist Dr. David Berceli who observes war-traumatized communities in the Middle East and Africa. He discovered that by activating the body’s natural tremor mechanism to release trauma, the need for psychotherapy or medication to control post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is decreased. Accordingly, he has lived extensively in Israel / Palestine, Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, Yemen, Egypt and Lebanon and worked by providing trauma relief workshops and designing recovery programs for international organizations around the world.

Steve Haines is a leading TRE provider with training in various locations around the world. “Shaking is normal and hugely beneficial,” he explains. “You see animals do it after a stressful encounter, yet we’ve forgotten how to access it. Under stress, your body is stuck in fight, flight or freeze which affects every system in your body; your heart rate, muscles and nervous system are all geared up to make you react quickly in response to danger. This response can remain in the body long after the event and become chronic. TRE can reset these systems.”

TRE consists of seven simple exercises that induce a natural tremor reflex in the body. (In case of lack of competence to perform the movements, the movement series can be revised and changed by experts in the field.) After performing the exercises related to a certain number of repetitions, lie down on the ground. The legs take the butterfly position (baddha konasana from yoga positions) and the feet are pulled towards the hips. The tremor response begins when you slowly bring your knees together. To find the vibration, you open and close your legs with very slow movements and find the relevant stopping point. The tremor usually starts in the legs and can move the spine upwards. In this way, the upper body and arms can also be involved in the swing movement. If the tremor becomes too strong, do not panic. This shaking state is the part where the application is healing, it should not be forgotten that it is the discharge of tensions in the body. It is also possible to control vibrations with leg movements. Afterwards, rest on the mat (savasana from yoga positions) to allow your mind and body to calm down. This is important for the combination of your healing with your body.

TRE’s reflexive muscle vibrations are generally pleasant and soothing. It has been observed that after performing TRE, feelings such as peace, relaxation, calmness and comfort are revealed in many people. It is stated that there are thousands of people who have recovered mentally and physically with this method. During the learning and experience phase, it is important to get support from experts in the field and to apply the movement series in the right positions to prevent damage to the body. When this muscle shaking / vibration mechanism is activated in a safe and controlled environment, the body is encouraged to return to a state of equilibrium.

Yoga

Yoga is a top concept that covers the general practice of meditative and physical education developed in the pre-writing periods around the Himalayan mountains. The first archaeological finds related to Yoga are seals and figures dating from 3000 to 1700 BC found in the Indus Valley of Pakistan. These depict some yoga and meditason postures. The first written sources are believed to be Vedas (theological texts, prayers) belonging to the Brahman tradition, dated between 900 and 500BC. Altough it is progressed to be the discipline with 8-digit spiritual education and developed as different applications for different needs in a subsequent period, it can be seen as exposition and assemble of more ancient teachings and the practice of life and healing, can be converted to a comprehensive and holistic doctrine. Asana (sitting Place): refers to the sitting posture used in meditation in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, it is thought that it provides an ideal state of energy and comfort physically, becoming compatible with Universal vibration.
Pranayama (“stopping the breath”): Prāna, breath,” āyāma”, means to stop. It can also be interpreted as the control of the life force, control of the breath, continuity and calmness are provided by calmness.
Pratyahara (“isolation”): means to isolate the sensory organs from the stimulation of external objects.
Dharana (“concentration”): is the focus of attention on a single object.
Dhayana (“meditation”): is intense contemplation on the nature of the object of meditation that is focused.
Samãdhi (“Emancipation”): the fusion of consciousness with the object of meditation.

The doctrine outlined above reflects an understanding of yoga that mainly encompasses meditation and spiritual discipline. The physicaly trainings of yoga, which puts especially in the Western world today at the forefront, , can be considered a physical meditation or a preparation for mental meditation and takes place in the daily routine of Yogi. This practice is applied as a series of movements involving postures named with the forms of nature and objects, such as Bow Pose (Dhanurasana), Chair Pose (Utkatasana), Eagle Pose (Garudasana).

Classification of Patanjali offers a person a way to control the impulse and fears that abuse a person with the kind of moral teaching that we encounter in all religions, and in this form it also carries the nature of worship. In addition, the disciplines of yoga are also divided into genres in which the different themes in its component are brought to the fore. For example, Hatha Yoga focuses on posture and breathing exercises, while Bhakti Yoga emphasizes spiritual purification through devotion to God, attachment to God with love. But it is debatable whether it will help with problems caused by different bodily or psychological traumas or with genetic and chemical reasons, even in advanced psychological disorders, the consequences that can lead to such an intense understanding of meaning can even be dangerous. Acupuncture

Acupuncture is the result of the development of a intellectual tradition of creative and destructive, healing and sickening forces, together with treatment practices whose usefulness is determined and developed by observation and experience. The understanding of health and disease of traditional Chinese medicine is closely related to the cult of ancestors, the belief in the power of ancient spirits. The application of acupuncture known today is made with steel needles. But since much earlier than written texts, blood letting as throwing cuts with the help of a stone was a common application and acupuncture can be considered to have evolved from that practice. It is based on an understanding of abstraction and causality, which, for example, is thought to help kill the evil spirit that causes the asylum, by drilling into the asylum zone. Besides there are a number of findings and speculations that such practices like stimulate body by energy points may have been common throughout Eurasia since time immemorial. One of the most interesting of these is that 5000-year-old mummy Ötzi has 15 tattoos on her body at points that coincide with those targeted in acupuncture practices, but it is impossible to prove that these tattoos have such a purpose or meaning.

The idea of the evil spirit that causes disease have been the basis for the maturation of the Chi (qi) concept and the idea of energy that fills life. The Chinese elite’s efforts to understand medical practice, drug preparation and its effects in various periods, combined with the knowledge of the causes of disease, the way of understanding the energy that makes healthy living and life possible, has led to this. The influence of medical systematic thoughts of other cultures, such as ancient Greece and later Arab civilization, also contributed to the development of the concept. The idea of vital energy, which Praxagoras and Erasistratus referred to as ‘pneuma’ in ancient Greece, also parallels the understanding of Chi (qi).

The text, which can be considered as the first written source to be considered related to acupuncture, is also the first text found on traditional Chinese medicine, the Mawangdui cemetery finds, and dates back to 168 BC. However, this text does not directly mention a systematic application of acupuncture, it is mentioned that the energy channels in the body called ‘mai’ and that the inflammatory area can be opened and cleaned with the help of a sharp stone. The first text that mentions a therapy or treatment with help of ‘needling’ is the Shiji text of Sima Qian dated 90 BC. But this text also does not mention direct the practice of acupuncture, which is known in the sense of regulating chi (qi) energy. After United States President Nixon visited China in 1972 and led the end of the isolation over the country, the world’s interest in acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine increased significantly.

Modern research has still not been able to achieve very consistent results regarding the effectiveness of acupuncture treatment. However, at least the benefits of its application for symptomatic treatment of pain types were found to be generally positive as a result of experimental studies, and thanks to the absence of side effects, it was approved by the World Health Organization and similar organizations as an alternative treatment, provided that it is applied by well trained acupuncturists. In addition, as expressed in traditional texts, the belief that the treatment works and the intention to heal influences positively the effectiveness of acupuncture for reasons that we more or less understand under motivation and placebo effect titles. Acupuncture is a human heritage that has transcended beyond the boundaries of the age in which it belongs and will still play a role in shaping the understanding of Medicine of the future. It can be safely applied, provided that you do your own detailed research on the practice and the organizations providing this service.

Ayurveda

Ayurveda is one of the oldest written health and healing sciences. Its meaning in native Sanskrit is ‘science of life’. The first written text is thought to be the Charaka Samhita, dating back 3000 years (400-200bc). But other contemporary cultural perspectives, for example, are the product of a common philosophy and way of thinking with China’s cultural heritage that gave birth to disciplines and practices such as kung-fu and thai-chi. Undoubtedly, its history goes back to the long periods of humanity, when the skill and oral tradition were more effective than writing, to the periods when writing was not used. Ayurveda is the product of a tradition in India where all this accumulation is systematized in Sanskrit.

Due to the lack of scientific tools, ancient and pre-human peoples, which have difficulties to study in detail, have tried to shed light on the subject by understanding the effective relations in the whole of nature. By treating human beings as a reflection of the whole, an attempt is made to analyze and heal the nature of human beings with effective forces in nature. In this way, inferences have been made in order to ensure harmony in nature in the body and to preserve the order that separates the healthy from the unhealthy. It classifies the forces of nature under three main concepts.
